Kathmandu, September 10 Nepal has sought more than Rs 3 billion ($20 million) in compensation from the international Loss and Damage Fund, arguing that the devastating Rasuwa floods were linked to climate change. Nepal sent a letter to the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage under the UN climate change framework last week. Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle and Agriculture, Forest and Environment Minister Geeta Chaudhary signed the letter. Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said Nepal has made an initial claim of $20 million. “We have made an initial claim of $20 million for now,” Khanal said in an interview with journalist Sudhir Sharma. “After assessing the damage caused by the disaster, we will present our case to the international community.” Nepal is among the countries with very low greenhouse gas emissions but is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Climate experts say Nepal should receive support from the Loss and Damage Fund not only for disaster-related losses but also in recognition of its minimal contribution to global emissions. The Fund’s international board makes decisions on financial support.
