The state of Timure after the Bhotekoshi flood. Kathmandu, September 6 A British member of the House of Lords has urged the UK government to step up support for Nepal as the country continues to struggle with the aftermath of the devastating floods that swept through Rasuwa and several downstream districts. Lord Popat, speaking in the House of Lords on September 1, said Nepal urgently needed food, medical supplies, emergency shelter and logistical support, as rescue teams continued searching for people missing in the disaster. “What happened was tragic and I welcome the financial support that the Government are giving, but I think we need to give more,” Popat said. He specifically pointed to the need for rescue operations, temporary reconstruction of homes and restoration of damaged infrastructure. “While a lot of bodies are still under mud,” he said, there was a need for continued rescue and logistical support, as well as temporary housing and infrastructure restoration. Popat also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Britain and Nepal, particularly the service of Nepali Gurkhas in the British Army.
